  • 8 Old Fashioned Charm - Bob Trollopes Veggie Pub.

Bob Trollopes is a very old timber framed pub on Newcastle’s Quayside. This previous 'Vegetarian Pub of the Year’ (2000) is decorated in a traditional style - bare floorboards, oak beams, old irons and a blazing open fire in the 'snug’. The pub is split into two distinct areas, to the front there is a larger bar and dining area with a plate glass window: the back room is very small, very dark and very cosy. The bar at the front provides a partial view of the Tyne bridge and Quayside. There is always music playing but it’s always quietly in the background so you can enjoy your conversation without being deafened. The bar at the rear of the pub may be accessed from the covered and tiled Victorian alley which also leads to the rear of the Red House. The menu is moderately priced and entirely vegetarian. I have to be truthful and say that the food is nowhere near as good as it used to be, however, that’s not to say that it’s bad. There is a fairly good variety of starters and main courses, and a more limited choice of traditional desserts. The food is quite nice and it’s moderately priced. The drinks are quite expensive compared to a number of other pubs in the city. This pub has a really nice atmosphere and in the winter months it’s lovely to sit in front of the old range, watching the flames and enjoying a stodgy pudding and a pint (or if you’re a wine drinker they do a nice shiraz). There are regular buses from the centre of the city to the Quayside and a taxi rank is located outside the pub.Although the bar is mostly on one level, using a wheelchair may present a few problems - there is limited space in the back room, the tables in the front bar are on a raised plinth, there are heavy swing doors to negotiate and the entrance is cobbled.Toilets to the rear of the pub are generally clean and well maintained.Opening Times:Monday - Saturday 11am - 11pmSunday noon - 10.30pm.Tel: 0191 2611037

  • 6 Veggie delight!

Although there are many more places catering for vegetarians it is sometimes still difficult, especially if you fancy a pint at the same time! Often you can scan the menu in a pub and come across the vegetarian lasagne option and your heart sinks because you know it's that or nothing. Bob Trollopes is one such pub to change all that. Situated on newcastle Quayside in one of the quaint old buildings is a gem of a pub if you happen to be or know someone vegetarian. Everything on the menu is Vegetarian so you know you have the same choice as everyone else. The food is typically pub fare and nothing fancy but there are lots of options ranging from burgers to sausages to chilli and all day breakfast amongst the food on offer. Prices are reasonable and portions large. The ambiance of the place is olde worldly and in winter there is often a fire going and you can always stay for a drink or two afterwards...

  • 8 Historic, Quaint & Cozy

How delightful to find such a traditional, stereotypically historic pub in a historic building in such an historic city!Small rooms, front and back: the former overlooking the street through bright windows, with a sense of the nearby river and the latter nestled away with access from a tiny alley separating "Bob's" from its neighbour.Bangers and Mash served with delicious onion gravy, with bangers that came from a farmers field—everything here is vegetarian, and I asked twice: "Are you sure these sausages are vegetarian?" so 'meaty' they were.Priced right for people who need to count their change, the environment is in no way reflective of anything other than care and concern for providing patrons with a good feeling, clean surroundings and healthful food.

  • 8 Great vegetarian food in an amazing building

My first visit to Bob Trollop was with some trepidation because the building looks ready to fall down at any moment. But upon entering you find yourself not in a pub, but in a cobbled street - the pub comprises the various rooms coming off this street! The interior is warm and cosy, if a little haphazard in its layout. Bob Trollop's has you would expect from a traditional pub, but the food is something special. The entire menu is vegetarian, and great tasting to boot. Considering that the whole menu contains no meat whatsoever, the variety on offer means it would be hard to not find something you want. We're talking pub grub, rather than gourmet food but it's all tasty and wholesome and cheap to boot. The pub has won awards for its vegetarian menu, and rightly so.You could walk past Bob Trollop and turn your nose up at the old interior, but get past that front door and it's a really pleasant surprise.
