1 Market Lane,
Occupying an old print works, Paradiso is tucked away upstairs with an imaginative menu that keeps customers coming back and alfresco dining available out on the balcony. Staff are friendly and efficient, making this a popular restaurant.
I've eatten at Paradiso several times, and always enjoyed my meal. I've taken girlfriends there, eaten with people from work, my parents, and with friends. I've had meals ranging from a single course grabbed at the beginning of a night out, to five courses with wine, cocktails, port and deserts. Its a little difficult to find the first time you go, but the best way to find it is to head to Popolo (the bar), go down the alley next to it, and the door to Paradiso is just to the left of the back door of Popolo. You go up a narrow staircase and come out into the dimly lit first floor. I love their leather lines booth chairs by the window, perfect for playing footsie under the tables. The menu changes infrequently, and features a good selection of meal and fish dishes, drawing it's influences mainly from the Med and Italy, but making nice use of local ingredients. I love their garlicky king prawns, and the risottos are wonderful too. The Moroccan Lamb Tangine was butter soft and perfectly spiced last time I had it. The deserts are not brilliant, so plan to skip them and have a starter instead. The wine list is not extensive, but I've had a few good bottles from it. The sparkling pink champagne was really good fun with seafood, and the coffee to follow was one of the better ones I've had in a while. If you're looking for somewhere thats a bit nicer than your average Italian, and don't mind the extra fiver a head, Paradiso is hard to beat. There's been a management change at the beginning of the year apparently, but I didn't notice any drop in standards.
